Another idea for dealing with .docx files

Another idea for dealing with the .docx files that Does Not Work!

It’s still bothering me that a user cannot simply and easily open these files and work with them. I had another idea: Gmail now includes the option to open some files as Google documents — would this work with the dread .docx?

I tested it out by ‘gmailing’ myself some attachments and here are the results. While I was at it I tested out a few other formats to see what Google offered me for them:

Filetype Gmail offers to open as:
.docx
  • download only
.txt
  • painlesslessly view in the browser
  • download
.odt
  • bittersweet: open as a Google document which requires signing in (and your firstborn child)
  • download
.pdf
  • view as html
  • download
.rtf
  • view as html
  • open as Google document (requires signing in)
  • download
.doc
  • view as html
  • open as Google document (requires signing in)
  • download

Just when I thought Google was going to help me out of this one — they didn’t. Hey Google! Are you listening?!

  1. Candace,

I came across this today: http://www.scribd.com/ described as “Youtube for Documents”. I have no idea if they support the latest XML formats, nor do I know if there’s a way to keep the document private or take them down once they’ve been converted into PDF, but I thought I’d send the link your way so you can check it out.
